Fiesta! Mundial 2011

Friday May 06 - Saturday May 7, 2011

One of the longest running events of its kind in West Michigan, the Latin American United for Progress (LAUP) Fiesta now draws over 20,000 attendees every year. Fiesta features the annual fiesta queen and king contest, the lowrider car show, Latino entertainment, a carnival, various exhibitors, and everyone’s favorite: lots of food!

Fiesta begins on Friday night with an outdoor concert and food booths lined up and down the Eighth Street Market Place. Saturday, the festivities continue with the annual queen and king contest held indoors. The afternoon brings a variety of musical acts, including mariachis, cultural dances, and more.

Exhibitors provide a variety of information about their products and services throughout the day in the Civic Center. In the parking lot, you can find cars, trucks, lowriders, and custom bikes, along with a variety of related exhibits and entertainment.

This year’s Fiesta theme is Fiesta Mundial! Roughly translated, the phrase means “World Party” and refers to the fact that everyone is invited. The event will feature entertainment and culture from other parts of the world alongside the Latino entertainment forms traditionally presented.
The Fiesta will begin on Friday at 12 p.m. with the annual carnival, entertainment and a Taste of Fiesta, offering a variety of Hispanic and ethnic foods. This year, a variety of bands will perform live music from 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Friday from a variety of genres, including salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, ballads and Spanish rock.

Events resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Carnival and food booths open along with a variety of entertainment indoors and out. After a year respite, the Fiesta Car Show returns this year in collaboration with Mirror Image Car Club. The annual LAUP Fiesta King and Queen Contest will take place indoors at the Civic Center from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

All events are family-friendly and there is no cost for entertainment at either of the stages. For more information, visit laup.org or watch for the Fiesta Program Insert in the Thursday, May 5 edition of the Holland Sentinel.
