National Ice Carving Competition Comes to Holland!

In partnership with the National Ice Carving Association, the annual Downtown Holland Ice Sculpting Competition is taking place this Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7. Over 20 students from colleges in Michigan and Ohio will be competing in two events: the buffet style competition from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday. The ice sculpting competition continues on Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with an ice sculpting demonstration and seminar by NICA certified master carver, Greg Butauski. The demonstration will be held at GDK Park next to Coldstone Creamery. The freestyle competition runs from 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm on Saturday. Come cheer on the students as they transform 300-pound blocks of ice into glistening works of art!

The ice sculptures that are completed as part of the buffet-style competition will remain on display on the sidewalk on the south side of 8th Street throughout the weekend. In addition to the competition, several Downtown Holland businesses have decided to get in on the frozen fun by sponsoring an ice sculpture for outside their door. Be sure to visit the 8th Street Grille, Boor’s Bootery, and the Model Drug Store and Apothecary Shop to see their surprise sculptures. Make sure to bring your camera!
